Progress towards fundamental symmetry tests with nonlinear optical rotation

چکیده
Magneto-optical (Faraday) rotation is a process in which the plane of light polarization rotates as light propagates through a medium along the direction of a magnetic field. In atomic vapors where ground state atomic polarization relaxes very slowly (relaxation rates . 1 Hz), there arise ultranarrow, light-power-dependent (nonlinear) features in the magnetic field dependence of Faraday rotation. The shot-noise-limited sensitivity of a magnetometer based on nonlinear Faraday rotation can exceed 10 11 G= p Hz, corresponding to a sensitivity of 10 6 Hz= p Hz to Zeeman sublevel shifts. Here we discuss recent progress in magnetometry based on nonlinear optical rotation and consider the application of these methods to searches for fundamental-symmetry-violating interactions.

Sensitive optical atomic magnetometer based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation
A self-oscillating magnetometer based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation using amplitude-modulated pump light and unmodulated probe light (AM-NMOR) in Rb has been constructed and tested towards a goal of airborne detection of 87 magnetic anomalies. In AM-NMOR, stroboscopic optical pumping via amplitude modulation of the pump beam creates alignment of the ground electronic state of the rubidi...

Chiral metamaterials represent a special type of artificial structures that cannot be superposed to their mirror images. Due to the lack of mirror symmetry, cross-coupling between electric and magnetic fields exist in chiral mediums and present unique electromagnetic characters of circular dichroism and optical activity, which provide a new opportunity to tune polarization and realize negative ...
متن کاملSymmetry Breaking of Counter-Propagating Light in a Nonlinear Resonator
Spontaneous symmetry breaking is a concept of fundamental importance in many areas of physics, underpinning such diverse phenomena as ferromagnetism, superconductivity, superfluidity and the Higgs mechanism. Here we demonstrate nonreciprocity and spontaneous symmetry breaking between counter-propagating light in dielectric microresonators. The symmetry breaking corresponds to a resonance freque...

Lorentz symmetry is a fundamental feature of modern descriptions of nature. Lorentz transformations include both spatial rotations and boosts. Therefore, experimental investigations of rotation symmetry provide important tests of the framework of the standard model of particle physics and single-metric theories of gravity [1]. In particular, the minimal SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) standard model successfu...

Paramagnetic Faraday rotation is a powerful technique for atom sensing widely used in quantum nondemolition measurements, fundamental symmetry tests, and other precision measurements. We demonstrate the use of a multipass optical cell for Faraday rotation spectroscopy and observe polarization rotation in excess of 100 rad from spin-polarized Rb vapor. Unlike optical cavities, multipass cells ha...
